Why
He Explored:
Ever since Columbus was a young boy he wanted to be a sailor. At age 14, he went
on his first sailing trip. As he got older he learned that King John, the King
of Portugal was trying to sail to India by sailing east. Columbus wanted to see
if he could reach the east by sailing west. Most people during this time still
thought that the world was flat and they thought Columbus would sail off the
edge of the earth..
Facts
and Details:
When Columbus was 14 he became sailing, and he continued to sail until 1504,
completing four voyages to the New World. Columbus studied geography books to
find evidence that his voyage from Spain to India was possible. He calculated
the size of Europe and Asia as well as the distance around the earth. Columbus
believed that the earth was round. He set sail on his first voyage to India on
August 3, 1492. He landed in the Bahamas and named the land San Salvador
claiming
the land for Spain.
Summary
of Explorations:
In 1492, Columbus' first voyage he sailed from Spain to the Southwest
part of the Bahamas and the Canary Islands. In 1494, his second voyage, he
sailed from Spain from Hispaniola and Cuba. Next, in 1498, his third voyage, he
traveled from Spain to small parts of South America, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. His
fourth and final voyage took him from Spain to Jamaica, Cuba, and back to Spain.
The voyage lasted from 1502 to 1504.
