Country of Origin: Mexico

Date of Origin: 1500's

Characteristics: It first came from Mexico in the 1500s and it became popular in the United Stated in the 1900s. The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog. It has a head shaped like an apple, a short pointed muzzle, and tiny dark eyes. This dog can either have short hair or long hair. The Chihuahua is not recommended for children. They can be nippy. This breed is lively and needs affection. It can be loyal and get very attached to its owners.

Height & Weight: This breed is only 6 to 9 inches tall and only weighs 2 to 6 pounds.

Original Function: The Chihuahua was first used as a ceremonial dog for the Aztec people. They would use the dog in rituals sometimes killing and eating them. Today this breed is used as a companion and as a pet.

Connection to Country: Because Mexico is warm the Chihuahua has a short coat. If you live in a colder state the dog may need to wear a sweater to keep warm. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
