Reproduction

• Hippopotamus reproduce like humans
• Sexually
• The sperm is combined with the egg and fertilization occurs inside the female hippopotamus
• Hippopotamus have their first baby at 5-6 years old
• Female carries baby inside for 7 1/2 months
• Usually has 1 at a time, but sometimes twins can be born
• The calf baby weighs about 100 pounds at birth

• 

• The calf can swim almost right away
• The baby nurses its mothers milk underwater
• Eat grass at 4-6 months
• Baby climbs mother's back and sunbathes while the mom swims
• The mother keeps her calf(ves) close
