The life of Giovanni da Verrazano
by Ryan

I am writing about Giovanni da Verrazano. My explorer was born in 1485. He also was born in Italy. In 1524, he was commissioned by the king of France. He wanted new lands for France and to search for a western sea passage to China.

In 1524, he was commissioned by King Francis. I claim new land for a western sea passage to China.

He also got killed and eaten by the native of Americans. The Narrow Verrazano Bridge is named after him. He seems to have landed on the coast of present day North Carolina.

John Cabot
by Chris

I am writing about an Italian explorer named John Cabot. John was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. Little is known about him as a boy.

We do know he wanted to be a sailor when he was young.

In 1497, he sailed for the first time for the king of England. He sailed to North America and landed in Cape Brenton. He also sailed the second time to the New Foundland.

We should remember him because he discovered New Foundland. Also he sailed for England to North America.

Giovanni Da Verrazano
by Carina

Giovanni Da Verrazano was born in about the year of 1485 and died about the year of 1527. He was born in Italy, but we do not know much about his early life. We do know more about his mid and late life.

The country he sailed for was France. His 1st voyage was to find a "northwest" passage from France to China, because China has herbs that could not grow in France. This voyage was in 1523. He also discovered what is now New York Harbor and sailed the coast of New England.

We still remember Giovanni Da Verrazano because there is a bridge named after him. The bridge's name is The Verrazano- Narrows Bridge. One interesting thing about Verrazano was that he was born in Italy and sailed for France. Another interesting thing about Verrzano was that he was sent to claim new lands for France to China. The most interesting thing about Verrazano was that he was eaten and killed by Natives.

Henry Hudson
by Kristen

I am writing about an explorer whose name is Henry Hudson. He was born in 1575 in England. Little is know of his early life.

Hudson sailed for the Netherlands. He sailed to the New York Bay in 1609 and to the Hudson Bay in 1611.

Also in 1611 a group of Englishmen gave him a ship called "Discovery" and a crew of 25 men. He sailed to the Hudson Bay. When it was winter, the ship was ice bound. Hudson, his son, and 7 sick men were forced on a small lifeboat, and were left to die.

We still remember Henry Hudson today because he discovered the Hudson River, which was named after him.

One interesting thing that I learned about Henry Hudson was that he sailed a ship that was called the Half Moon. Another interesting thing that I learned about Henry Hudson is that he was a person who was searching for a new route to China. But the most interesting thing that I learned about Henry Hudson was that he discovered the Hudson River and it was named after him.

Henry Hudson was a great explorer.

John Cabot
by Katherine

John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy in 1450. He was liable to have met Christopher Columbus because he lived in his hometown. In 1497, he sailed to Cape Brenton Island under the flag of England.

Cabot believed that he could reach Asia by sailing westward. His crew reached Cape Brenton Island, Nova Scotia. He thought he had found Asia and claimed the land for King Henry the 7th, and sailed looking for Japan a year later but never found it.

Today we remember John Cabot because he claimed America, "the new land", for King Henry the 7th, and later the British got most of that land.

Samuel De Champlain
by Kira

I am writing about Samuel De Champlain. He was born in 1567. He was born in France.

When Samuel was a young boy, his father was a sea captain. Young Samuel was trained in seamanship, navigation and map making.

In the 1590's Champlain sailed to West Indies, and Mexico for Spain. When he was going to the West Indies and Mexico his voyage took two years. In 1608 while in Canada, Champlain founded a fur trading post in Quebec.

We still remember Samuel De Champlain today because he found some places and he made many important voyages. He was a good man. One interesting thing I learned about Champlain was he founded Quebec in 1608. Another interesting thing I learned about Champlain was he helped the Huron Indians fight the Iroquois. The most important thing I learned about Champlain is he found a lake and got it named after him (Lake Champlain).

I'm going to tell you about Samuel De Champlain. He was born in 1567. He was born in France, and traveled as a young man. His father was a sea captain, and young Samuel was trained in seamanship, navigation, and map making.

Samuel De Champlain explored for Spain. In 1603 he went to Canada. He discovered the St. Lawrence River.

We still remember the explorer because he made the first permanent settlement in the New World. It was called Quebec. He also helped the Algonqiuons fight against the Iroquois, and that is a little about Samuel De Champlain.

Giovanni da Verazano
by Debora

Giovanni da Verazano was born in 1485 in Italy. Verazano explored and sailed for France to North America.

In 1523, his first voyage was to find a northwest passage to the Orient around the northern continent of America. He discovered what is now New York Harbor. He probably also explored the coast of New England

Giovanni da Verazano is remembered today because he came to explore in our area and the Verazano Narrows Bridge was named after him. Giovanni landed in the Carolinas. He sailed north to the latitude of Newfoundland, and named the intervening territories of Nova Galia.

Giovanni was killed and eaten by the natives in 1527. He was a great explorer and I hope you think that too.

John Cabot
by Eric

John Cabot was an Italian ship captain who sailed for England. He was born in Genoa, Italy in 1450. There is little information about his early life, but I think it is safe to say that he wanted to be a sea captain.

John Cabot sailed to North America, and South America. He explored Cape Brenton Island, Labrador, and Newfoundland. On his first voyage he sailed a ship called the Matthew with a crew of 18 men. On his second voyage he had two ships and a crew of 300 men.

We should remember John Cabot because if he didn't claim North America for England we could have been speaking French or Spanish etc. He helped make our country the American Colonies.

Henry Hudson
by Alberto

Henry Hudson was born in 1575 in England. He wanted to be a sailor as a child.

He sailed to Holland or the Netherlands. He was sent by England. On his first trip he was working for an English trading company. He reached the shores of Greenland and Spitsbergen, but had to turn back because of ice. On his third trip from Amsterdam the ice stopped him, he steered west and south down the Atlantic coast to New York Harbor and up the Hudson River.

On his fourth and final journey he sailed in the Discovery, a 55 ton ship. On June 22, 1611 the crew tied up Hudson, his small son Jon, and many other sailors and set them adrift in a small boat to die. We do not know what happened to them.
