1986 is a year full of excitement and fear. Bombs exploded left and right throughout the year; a bomb on a TWA airplane, a bomb in a German nightclub, a bomb in a Paris department store. The U.S. destroys a terrorist group headquarters. The use of crack rises in the country, approximately 75 metric tons come into the US. Congress passes different anti-drug laws to try and stop this spread. The U.S. debt reaches a record 2 trillion and retail stores buy out their competition at an astounding rate. 86 is a year to remember.
On January 20 Martin Luther King Day is observed for the first time.
On January 24 Voyager 2 becomes the closest spaceship to pass by Uranus
On January 26,The Chicago Bears defeat the New England Patriots in a landslide victory, 46 to 10 in New Orleans, Louisiana in Super Bowl XX.
Space Shuttle Challenger explodes on the 28th of January. Christa McAuliffe, the first woman to go on a space shuttle, dies in the Challenger explosion.
The Legend of Zelda is released on February 21.
George O'Keefe dies at age 98 on March 6, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
A nuclear disaster on April 26 at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union sends the world into a panic. The Soviets don't admit the disaster for two days. The plant leaks causes widespread contamination of vegetation and wildlife and thousands of people are affected from high amounts of radiation. The affects of the disaster will last for decades.
U.S. cyclist Greg LeMond becomes the first American to win the Tour de France bicycle race on July 27.
The Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Drama L.A. Law debuts on NBC on September 15
The Musical phantom of the opera is first performed at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, England on October 9.
From October 18 to October 27 the Mets battle the Red Sox in the Fall Classic. The New York Mets come back from the brink of defeat in game six of the World Series to defeat the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
Nintendo game is launched and becomes the new fad. Nintendo was founded in 1898 to manufacture playing cards. Nintendo systems cost $100 and game cartridges go for $35 to $40 each.
