1967 was a year full of rapid change and
dispute in the country. This was a year in which Muhammad Ali was expelled from
the National Wrestling League, Mickey Mantle hit his 500th home run(!) and the
Red Sox lose the world series again- keeping the infamous curse alive! Also in
1967, the 6 Day War happened in the Gaza Strip, there were efforts made to stop
to cold war, the race barrier is broken in the Supreme Court. 1967 was a classic
turbulent 60's year full of peace, love, and drugs.

Israel's population toped 3.5 million with some 2.4 million Jews and more
than 1 million Arabs as the
Six Day War (June 5-10) expanded Israeli territory.

Also in July, U.S. runner Jim Ryun sets a new
1,500-meters world record of 3 minutes 33.1 seconds, an improvement of 2.5
seconds on the existing record set by the Australian runner
Herb Elliott in 1960.

Pop Festival in
Monterey, California, June 16, 17 and 18 is the first large rock
music gathering.

On July 23, a race riot erupts in Newark,
New Jersey after the police beat a black man who was stopped for a traffic
violation. The National Guard is called in to restore order, 26 people die,
1,300 are injured, and millions of dollars worth of property is destroyed.
