Series to the Dodgers by one game. Don Larsen of the Yankees pitches the
first “perfect” game in Series history, allowing no hits in the fifth
game.

- Opening

Cooperative Association acquires the company from Jacob Kaplan; its 4,500
member grape-growers become the first farmers in history to own
an international business.
- A Brazilian soccer
player named Edson Arantes "Pele" do Nascimento is 15 when he is
signed with the Santos team to begin an 18-year career of 1,253 games in
that he scored 1,216 goals to become the world-famous athletic figure known
in Brazil as Perola Negra (Black Pearl).
- Elvis
became very popular in 1956 by coming out with his famous songs such as
" Love me Tender."
- The Montreal Canadiens defeated
the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in the 1956 Stanley
Cup. Jean Beliveau set the all time record with 7 goals in the Stanley
cup series. Henri Richard went on to win his 11th Stanley Cup ring. Montreal
won the series at home by defeating the read wings 3-1.
- San Francisco defeated
Iowa 83-71 in the NCAA
championship.
