During 1938 many important
things had happened. Many of them had to do with World War II. Some were also
about inventing new and better things. During 1938 Walt Disney made his first
full length cartoon, Snow White. Also Hitler is on the move in Europe conquering
countries. Also things that might never come to a surprise, the Yankees won
the World Series against the Cubs 4 to 0. Even though World War II was horrible,
many people will remember 1935 as a time for inventing.
- On March 13, Germany
annexes Austria.
- Teflon
is accidentally discovered on April 6 by chemists working with Freon at a
Dupont lab in New Jersey. It would later be used to create the non stick
surface for frying pans.
- The Cloister
was first opened on May 10 in New York City. Much of the museum's collection
was a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
- Action
Comics introduced comic Superman in June. It was made by Jerry
Siegel and Joseph Shuster. They were both 24 when they created Superman
or Clark Kent.
- On June 25 the Fair Labor
Standards Act is passed. It was written to protect workers.
- Olympic
Park is designated as a National Park on June 29.
- On July 17 Douglas
"Wrong Way" Corrigan flew from Brooklyn, NY to Ireland instead
of California as his flight plan has stated. He claimed his compass had
failed but he really just wanted to make a transatlantic flight and had been
turned down.
- A hurricane
hits Long Island on September 21 before rolling through to Connecticut
and then on New
England. More than 700 people were killed on Long Island alone.
- On September 28 Time
Magazine named Adolf Hitler "Man
of the Year".
- On October 30 America
panics when it tuned into "War
of the Worlds" broadcast by Orson
Wells.
- On November
9 and 10, Nazis looted and destroyed the synagogues and stores of German
& Austrian Jews during Kristallnacht.
- President Roosevelt
establishes the March of Dimes
to help save children from Polio.
- Snow
White the first full length cartoon made by Walt Disney Came out in
1938.
- Don
Budge won the Men's Singles title in tennis at Wimbledon. He also won
the grand slam of tennis by winning the championships of Australia, England,
France, and the United States.
- Motts
apple juice is introduced by the Duffy-Mott Co.
- The New
York Yankees win the 1938
World Series in 4 straight games against the Chicago
Cubs.
- Civil
Aeronautics Authority is created to investigate airplane accidents and
recommend changes.
