to a rocking year! 1928 had some of the most influential people and events. A
lot of cool things happened. For example, Double Bubble, a new bubble gum was
invented. The Olympics took place in Amsterdam and America was the leader in
medals. Other very interesting and important things happened as well. The
Kellogg-Briand Pact was signed. The New York Yankees won the World Series. Also,
Mickey Mouse was introduced in "Steamboat Willie" and "Plane
Crazy."
As you can see it was a very
exciting and fun filled year. Don't miss it!!
- Feb 11 The 1928
Olympics took place in Amsterdam. America was the leader in medals. US
athletes won 22 gold, 18 silver, 16 bronze 56 in total the most medals.
3,905 contestants came from 46 countries.
- April 1 Disney Studios
began work on the first Mickey
Mouse cartoon in 1928. "Mickey Mouse in Plane Crazy" was
inspired by Charles Lindberg's record breaking Trans-continental flight. It was
silent animated motion picture.
- April - Last Oxford
Dictionary appears in 12 volumes after 44 years of work. The
editor-in-chief, James A. H. Murry, did most of the work.
- June 18 - Amelia
Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. Her aircraft
that took 24 hours and 49 minutes to make it across the Atlantic.
- June 28 -Lois
Armstrong performs "West End Blues" (composed by King Oliver)
was one of his best. Armstrong further established his leadership on trumpet
in his 1928 recording. "West End Blues" made Lois Armstrong very
famous.
- June 29 - NY Goethals
Bridge opened to traffic. The Goethals Bridge spans the Arthur Kill
linking Elizabeth, New Jersey with the Howland Hook area of Staten Island,
New York.
- June - Beijing
surrenders to Chiang Kai-Shek.
- August 27 - The Kellogg-Briand
Pact was formed. It was developed to outlaw war. The treaty marked the
high point of idealism in the pursuit of peace. However, it did not succeed.
- September 3 - Philo Taylor
Farnsworth invented the current system of television
transmission and reception at his 202 Green Street laboratory. It is one of
the great scientific inventions of the 20th century.
- October 9 - The New York Yankees
win the World Series by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 0.
- November 9 - Richard
Byrd starts his expedition to Antarctica First flight over Antarctica
- November 18 - "Steamboat
Willie" introduces Mickey Mouse in the first animated cartoon with a
sound track.
- December 26 - Bubble
Gum is perfected by Frank H. Fleer Co. Walter Diener who has been
experimenting for more than a year invented it. Double Bubble bubble Gum was
first invented.
- Penicillin
was invented by Alexander Fleming, John C. Sheehan, Andrew J. Moyer. It is
now the cure to a lot of diseases.
- Vitamin_C
is discovered.
- Herbert
Hoover was elected 31st President of the United States. He
was President from 3/4/1929 to 3/4/1933. Calvin Coolidge was the President
of 1928.
