In 1911 the U.S. population increases to 94 million higher than Japan, Italy, France, Ireland, and England. This number is not as high as Russia, India and China. It was during this year that a horrific fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York and Ernest Rutherford invented the nuclear model of the atom. 1911 was a year of firsts. It was in 1911 that the first person went to the South Pole and the first Indianapolis 500 motor car race was held. 1911, was an exciting year full of very amazing events.

• In March Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River in Arizona is finished as the first large-scale irrigation project.
• The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory sweeps through New York on March 25 and kills 146 people out of 500 who were not able to escape. This rouses people to demand better working conditions.
• John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company trust is broken up by the Supreme Court on May 15.
• On May 23 the New York Public Library's main branch on Fifth Avenue opens.
• The First Indianapolis 500 motor race is held on May 30.
• The Chevrolet Motor Company and Louis Chevrolet is incorporated in November. It produces the first Chevrolet motorcars in a New York City plant.
• On December 14 Roald Amundsen from Norway becomes the first man to reach the South Pole.
• Crisco is introduced by Cincinnati's Procter & Gamble, it is a type of shortening.
• Ernest Rutherford proposed the nuclear model of the atom at the University of Manchester. The model was made of a positive charged nucleus surrounded by electrons.
• The Carnegie Corporation in NY makes a $125 million gift to encourage education.
• California  passes constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote.
• Willis H. Carrier presented a paper to The American Society of Mechanical Engineers which creates the basis of modern air-conditioning.
• Henri Matisse paints The Red Studio and The Blue Window. 
• Enzymes and Coenzymes acquire the name vitamins.
• Southern pine trees expand their uses to Kraft paper (packing paper) This Discovery will update the paper industry and bring more money and prosperity to the South.
• Automobile safety increases with the electric self-starter for motorcars and truck engines. This was invented by C.F. Kettering and Cadillac boss, Henry M. Leland.
• The Nester Company builds the first film studio in Hollywood.
• Irving Berlin writes Alexander's Ragtime Band.
• Marie Curie receives Nobel Peace prize for Chemistry.
