Yukon Territory
by Frank, John & Rodney

We rode the bus to the Yukon Territory from British Columbia. It was a great trip. Let us tell you a little about it. First we took the bus to Watson Lake. A tour guide told us the Yukon was the 12th territory to enter the Union and ninth in size at 483,450 sq. km. (186,660 sq. mi.) This major city was incredible and it was great. On the way we saw the province bird and flower, the raven and the fireweed. It was amazing to see so much wide-open countryside. It was enchanting. We never saw a city so beautiful. While we were on the bus heading for Whitehorse, the capital and most populated city, we saw an explosives factory. It was kind of scary and it belched an unimaginable amount of smoke. We visited the Macbride Museum. We saw prehistoric mammal exhibits and some displays about the 1898 Gold Rush. Next we took a walk in the nearby forest. To wander trails once trodden by miners and trappers was inspiring. We visited the SS Klondike II, the last of the sternwheelers and saw many exhibits about the original riverboats and how they were used in the Yukon. We also visited the Takhini Hot Springs. The water is 96.8°F all year long. We had a great time there. We will never forget it.

Then we went to Dawson City; it was cozy and warming. While we were there my friend caught a cold, but it was gone in a few hours thanks to the care of those charming people. Then we went to Northern Yukon National Park. It was beautiful but shockingly cold, we thought we would freeze to death.

Then we took the bus to Keno City. Only 30 people live there. We visited Keno Museum on the mining history of the Yukon in the 1800s. In our opinion this is a must see place if your going to the Yukon on a holiday. Then we saw a gold mine that was truly enthralling it was amazing. Now that was a sight we will never forget. Now to finish up our trip we went mountain biking, it was really fun. We all got some great exercise and saw some great views like the beautiful mountains. The Yukon may be cold and have a small population of only about 30,000 but we had a magnificent time that we will never forget. So we decided to go and check out the Northwest Territories. See you there. J
