Nunavut
by Clara, Daniel,  & Sandro

We were really enjoying our Canadian holiday. Quebec was great! We had heard in our hotel lobby all about Nunavut and we were anxious to visit. We took a plane from Montreal, Quebec to Arctic Bay in Nunavut. From above, Nunavut looked like many tiny islands surrounded by blue seas.

Nunavut is very unique place to live. It is pretty big. Nunavut is the second largest territory in Canada but has only 28,000 people! The colors of the Nunavut flag are blue and gold. Nunavut has 26 communities but they are really spread apart. Much of Nunavut is made up of islands.

We started our tour of Nunavut at Arctic Bay. There we bought a little Nunavut flag. We stopped at Baker Lake. We went to the lake and fished for a while. We caught many fish. They were mostly flounder. From there we went to Coral Harbor. We liked just sitting and watching the boats come and go. Then we went to Cape Dorist. We wanted to go to Manitoba and we won the money we needed from a snow mobile race in Cape Dorist. The competition was intense. We won it and made our reservations on a plane headed to Manitoba in a week. At Cape Dorist we met a man that took us by dog sled to Iqualuit, the capital of Nunuvut. Those dogs were really friendly. Iqualuit is the largest and most populated city in Nunavut. The hotel we stayed at is 100 years old. Many of the children are friendly too.

The size of Nunavut is 1,900,000 sq. km. It is five times bigger than Alaska. Nunavut's average temperature in July is 5°F. In January the average temperature is -25° F.

The languages of the Nunavut people include Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, and English. We could only speak English so it was very hard to talk to most Nunavuts. However, when we were there we bought a tour book in Inuit and learned a few words in the languages.

We stopped at the government center outside of Nunavut and learned a few rules and traditions about the Nunavut government. Nunavut is a very unique place.

Finally, we took a plane to Manitoba for another adventure in Canada.
