Newfoundland

We started our journey off in Quebec. Now were on our way to Newfoundland. We drove south along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We wanted to visit the beautiful city of St. John's. St. John's is the capital of Newfoundland. On our way to St. John's, we saw an Atlantic Puffin sitting on a Pitcher Plant. The tour bus driver told us that the Atlantic Puffin is Newfoundland's province bird and the Pitcher Plant is the province's flower. Our journey took us through Corner Brook. Corner Brook is the best for transportation and manufacturing. We visited Marble Mountain and went skiing. They say it’s the best skiing east of the Rocky Mountains.
Then we headed north and then west along the Atlantic Ocean's coastline. We were very lucky to find the Trans Canadian Highway. We stopped at Notre Dame Bay and went fishing. There were many houses, wharves, and fishing boats. Our next stop was in Gander. We visited the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. We saw many World War II airplanes. We got to sit in the cockpit of a real DC-3. It was awesome! We were lucky to be in Gander for the Annual Festival of Flight. Then we visited Gander Academy. We learned that on 9/11, 750 passengers on International flights were stranded in Gander, so the stayed at Gander Academy. The Academy was nice enough to let them use their gym and classrooms for four days. The rest of the way to St. John's, we took a tour bus down. The tour bus driver told us that Newfoundland is 405,720 square kilometers. He also told us the population is 533,800 (2001). He told us that Newfoundland entered the confederation in March 31, 1949. It's Canada's newest province.
Next stop is St. John's. While we were in St. John's, we played sports like swimming, curling, tennis and ice-skating. We met a lot of friendly people ice-skating. We were invited to a family's house and gave us gifts. He told us that the people in Newfoundland offer gifts when a guest is invited to their home. If they didn't, it would be very impolite. The host usually makes arraignments for the guest. If the guest just showed up, it would be very rude. He offered us cod cheek, squid burgers and seal flipper pie. After dinner we walked along St. John's Harbor. There were lots of small houses painted in bright colors along the way.
We had a great time in Newfoundland. See you in our next adventure at Prince Edward Island!
