A Portrait of
Squanto
by Kaitlin

When Squanto, friend of the Pilgrims, was 14, a floating island came into sight. Everyone was exited. On the floating island were white men! When the white men came to shore, they traded jewels for the Indian's furs. They asked Squanto's father if Squanto could come with them to England. His father said yes, so they were off. In England, Squanto learned many new things, like the thing that he thought was a floating island was called a boat, and many other things like that. He even learned to speak English! When he came back to his village in America though, all his people were gone! They all had died of a terrible sickness. In the camp's place there was a village! Squanto decided to help the newcomers, the Pilgrims. After Squanto helped them with their crops, they had a feast for three days. That was the FIRST THANKSGIVING!
