The War of 1812 was fought between Americans and the British from June 1812 to the spring of 1815. But the peace treaty was signed in Europe in the winter of December 1814. The main areas of fighting were on the Canadian borders, in the Chesapeake Bay region and along the Gulf of Mexico. There were also battles at sea.

On January 21, 1813, the Battle of Raisin River took place. The American forces commanded by General Winchester, surrendered to Colonel Henry A. Proctor of Great Britain. During this battle one hundred men died and five hundred were captured.

The British sailed up the Potomac River and easily captured and burned the capital down. Dolly Madison sent a letter to her sister Ann the day Washington, D.C. was burned by British forces. She was the wife of James Madison.

On January 8, 1815, American forces, under General Jackson defeated British forces trying to take over New Orleans. The battle, took place after the Treaty of Ghent was signed. It was the greatest victory of the War of 1812.

The War of 1812 was to end in 1814 but continued until 1815.  The War of 1812 helped the country believe that we could fight off any threats by any country and that we we should concentrate on becoming a better nation.
