Dear Mom and Dad,

fish.gif (1581 bytes)The Dominican Republic is great! The temperature is tropical warm and humid, which means VERY HOT and wet! You will have to wear shorts and T-shirts. Bring bathing suits because the oceans here are terrific! Don't forget suntan lotion!

Oh mom, if you go to the mall for clothes, you will see many long skirts, (brightly colored ones I might add), and scarves with designs on them like animals. You will probably like the clothes since you are a dressy type of person.

The food the Dominicans eat is very delicious. They usually eat seafood and fruits such as papayas, guavas and mangoes. Popular Dominican soup is Dominican Creole soup, which contains stewmeat, peppercorns, carrots, onions, vermicelli, potatoes, herbs and cabbage.

Dad, you don't have to worry about jobs. You can probably work in a sugarcane plantation. These crops make a lot of money. Some other important crops are rice, bananas, coffee, cacao and tobacco. While working you should wear a straw hat to keep the sun out of your eyes and a pair of shorts due to the heat.

Oh yeah, before I forget, in 1964, the government put garbage disposals and aqueducts in all the large cities. The government also made a program that provides health service, so you don't have to worry about any sicknesses that you can catch.

If you want to go on a tour to Santo Domingo, (the capitol), to see the cathedral, (which is the oldest existing settlement found by the Europeans), you can go to the airport or buy a four wheeler. Four wheelers are preferred because they are cheaper than cars and can go up some of their very beautiful mountains. They can also go much faster.

I think you guys will really like it here. Remember all the stuff I told you! Adios!

Your daughter,
Emily
