Manatee World

Manatee.bmp (10238 bytes)There once was a family of manatees, or sea cows as they are also known, who enjoyed swimming rapidly along the Atlantic Ocean. They lived in Florida and in relatively warm waters.

One day two evil, scary looking, poachers were diving in the same area where the manatees swim and find plants to eat. The poachers had harpoons and nets to catch and then kill them. I called to the manatees to get away and luckily, the men were too slow, so they did not catch them. I was worried about their mother since she is going to have a calf any day now.

The next day as I went on my afternoon walk, I saw the same two men about to go diving again. I asked, "What are you doing?"

They said, "Just taking a dive."

They asked me who I was and I said, "I take care of the injured animals in these waters. I do this so they will not become extinct." On my way back from my walk I turned to look at the sunset. I saw the men trying to kill the manatees, they were not just diving. I was so angry and disturbed that I ran to call the state troopers. They got there, ASAP. I brought them to the where the poachers were. While on the shore, the state troopers saw the poachers trying to kill the innocent manatees. Since they were caught in the act, they gave up and no one was hurt. The officers arrested the evil poachers and put them on trial for killing endangered animals. They were found guilty and went to jail for four years.

After they heard about this story and that the manatees were becoming extinct, people started protecting the manatees. The people now nurse the injured manatees so that they can live their regular life span of 50 to 60 years. As for the poachers, they never killed another sea animal again.

Guess what! It was a girl! The manatees mother had a baby after all.
