Hi Mom and Dad,

I am in Honduras. It is very hot and dry here. The high temperature is around 80 degrees. Bring tee shirts and shorts and all our summer clothes.

I hope you remember your Spanish, because that’s what most of the people speak here. Some people in the North speak English. Most of the people are Catholic. The money they use in Honduras is the lempira. Honduras gets most of its money from coffee and bananas. They are important exports. Other important crops are corn, dry beans, and rice. Citrus fruit and pineapples are also grown.

Soccer is a very popular sport. There are lots of water sports here. I've seen water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing, and snorkeling. You can sign up for a jet ski safari which takes you out in to the open water. There's great snorkeling right off the beach or boats can be rented to take you out to the reefs. Parasailing lets you view the islands as you are harnessed into a parachute and pulled behind a boat like a human kite. You go up about 100 feet where you can see the beautiful colors of the reef. Shellfish is the most common type of fish. Chicken is also a favorite here.

In Honduras the big coastal towns are interesting because of their history. Towns like Tela and La Ceiba had large banana companies. Today Tela is a popular beach town. La Ceiba is bigger and is known for its "Carnival". This is where I hope we can live when you all get here. It has rainforests, wetlands, a fort and long beaches.

Forests of oak and pine trees cover the cooler highlands and long savanna grasses cover the drier parts of Honduras. Palms are found in the coastal regions.

Honduras has a lot of wildlife. Bear, dear, monkey, wolf, and coyote can be found. The cat family includes jaguar, puma, and the lynx. A wide variety of reptiles exist. There is also a lot of birds and marine life.

About 90 percent of the people are mestizo. That's people of Spanish and Native American ancestry. (We learned about that in Ms. Garrido's Social Studies class.) Sixty % of the people live in the country.

I hope to see you soon. I miss you a lot. I hope Rob and Sarah come too.

Love,
George
