The Life of a Black-Footed Ferret

It got larger and closer with every stride it took. The sleek, black-footed ferrets ignored it and kept chasing the prairie dogs. Then there was a loud boom and the prairie dog they were chasing fell limp to the ground in front of them. This happened repeatedly, and many prairie dogs were killed. The ferrets ran back into their home. Charlie asked, "What was that, Mama?"

Mrs. Ferret answered, "That was a human, and they are destroying the prairie dogs. We must leave immediately to find another prairie dog town."

Mr. Ferret said, "We will leave tomorrow."

The next day, the ferrets set out into the massive prairie. They brought enough food to last them 2 weeks. The first week went well, except for a shelter shortage and no food to kill. Then in the second week, a harsh rainstorm hit in the night. Luckily, the ferrets found a deserted mole hole. They spent the night there.

When the two-week food supply was up, they still hadn't found a prairie dog town. They wandered for days with no sign of food. When they thought they were done for, they met a raven. They begged him for food until he gave them a dead rat he had found. They thanked him and Deak asked him, "Have you seen any prairie dog towns in these parts?"

He said, "The only one I know of around here is 40 miles north."

In the morning, they were about to set off when Squeak squeaked, "Look at all those rats!" There was a pile of portly rats in a corner from the raven. The ferrets were very happy because the rats provided them with food for the next week.

After 2 weeks 1 week they had no food, they had some good luck. There was a family of black footed ferrets up ahead. Deak said, "Hello! We are also ferrets. Can we stay at your home tonight? We are very hungry." The father of the other family came over and discussed matters with the parents. It was agreed that they could stay at their home for a while. While they were at the home, they were all fed and cleaned. After they were cleaned and fed, they looked beautiful. The sun glinted off their golden fur on their backs. The golden fur stretched all the way up to their head, where it turned into a midnight black, which looked liked a mask. Their paws were covered with black fur, and they looked like they were wearing black socks, or boots. They stayed at the ferret’s house for a couple days and then were on their way, full and clean.

After many days, in the distance, they saw… could it be? Yes! A prairie dog town! It was dawn and the sun was about to rise, the time they went to sleep. They ran into a hole, and when they reached the bottom, they curled up together and fell into a deep, deep sleep.
