Crocodile Chase
By Veronica

MiMi, KaiKai, Makia, and her brothers Piki and KoKo were a very happy American Crocodile family living in the Gulf of Mexico. Unless you counted the fact that whenever Mrs. MiMi Crocodile came to visit, everyone screamed and altogether put on "Quite a show of bad manners" said MiMi. After a while, MiMi had to stop her visits because her mate, KaiKai wouldn't let her. He said that the humans would make her into crocodille leather for boots, or handbags. As it turned out KaiKai was right.

In the middle of the night, poachers snuck into the crocodile nest made out of brush and mud. They shot MiMi and KaiKai with silenced revolvers and then dragged their bodies out to their pickup truck.

The next morning, the children awoke to find their parents gone and the only home they had ever known, ruined. They salvaged what little food they could from the wreck, and left.

After weeks of swimming along the Gulf, the crocodiles found an area where they could live in isolation and peace. Each day, KoKo would try to build a nest of twigs, mud, and leaves, while Makia tried to teach Piki to hunt for food such as, birds, fish and, the ocasional stray dog.

One day, KoKo came thundering into the nest.

"Humans! Humans! Run!" Makia grabbed Piki and ran with her brother. Around, and around, they ran with the humans close on their trail.

Luckily, the crocodilles had some camoflauge with the undergrowth. Their gray- green color made them almost impossible to see. But their pursuer was a camoflauge expert so he could just spot them ahead of him.

After running for about 20 minutes, they ran into a cage. KoKo let out a roar that was meant for a male crocodile to use to challenge another male for a female.

"Easy there ole’ fella!" said their captor as he wiped sweat from his face.

"You crocodiles wil have lots of fun at the wildlife reserve."

So that was where they were going! The man was not a poacher but a scientist who was among many others trying to preserve the lives of American Crocodiles.
