Good Bye Fuzzy
by Alice

I'm Fuzzy and I'm a polar bear. My kind is the largest and strongest carnivore on Earth. I look very old but I'm not as old as I look. And I'll tell you about that right now.

It all started here. I was born prematurely. That means when others are born in December and January, I was born in November.

Something happened to me when I was 2 weeks old, I was playing in the whitest snow I've ever seen of the Arctic, and I fainted. That may sound very surprising but that was what happened. Mamma said I did not have the right amount of nutrients. Papa said I couldn't play anymore! Seriously that’s not fair! Papa said when there is a cub there is rules for the cub! When I grow up, I'm not going to be helpless any more and start my own life.

So now I'm a little fuzzy cub and staring at my siblings. All the other families have 2 little cubs but we have three! I think I'm jinxed! Woozy and Dan was playing with their friends. At lunch I had my favorite food which was ringed seals and berries! I hate it when it's winter because we have to eat cold plants! Yuck! Mama said I should never go near adult seals. They are our only enemies next to something called humans I think I know why adult seals hate us. Probably because we eat their little poor seals. Back to lunch. I guess that’s the only thing I can actually enjoy in my life!

One day when I was watching Woozy and her friends, (I 'm sooooo jealous) I saw a very, very, very, big birdie flying over and landing with a crash! Wait a minute there was something wrong with that birdie! It did not flap its wings. Mama and Papa crawled out in their chubby legs and watched. One part of the birdie's body opened and I started to crawl toward the bird and see what's going on but papa stopped me. I can't do anything by myself! No wonder they say cubs are helpless when they are one year old! From the hole of the birdie's body came out four animals that were walking on 2 feet. Isn't that cool! I tried to do that, but it did not work! The 4 animals had dark blue skin but then it looked like a covering of some sort. Then they started yelling and jumping. What a bunch of weirdos!

"It can't be," said Mama.

"I think it is," said papa softly.

"What?"

Then one of them started walking toward me. It was just about to pick me up when Mama and Papa growled at it. I heard adult polar bears are very protective of their little fuzzy cubs.

"Let's go back to the den."

Then I started to wonder what mama meant by "It can’t be."

"LET'S GO BACK TO THE DEN!" mama yelled.

I followed her to the den and she explained these animals made my mama an orphan. They took them away and put them in cages. Then they take their fur and use them to make clothes. So that’s what humans were and this is why I think my kind is dying out! No wonder mama said not to go near them. I agreed. They might take me away and that’s exactly what happened to me. On the day before they were supposed to take me away, they put me in this big cage. I didn't want to go! Mama was captured too. She was found hitting at my cage to break it open. I started crying. In the morning they put me in the big Birdie. I waited but the birdie did not start working. Then the other polar bears came and broke us free. We hurried out to the snow and the humans did not notice and started flying without us! We're saved!

So I'm capable of being here to finish the story about my past.
