The Bornean Orangutan

The Bornean Orangutan is a really wonderful animal because of how it behaves, how it looks and where it lives.

The Bornean Orangutan is not like most animals because it has a really long arm span. When his big arms are spread out they are about seven feet wide.

Its body is covered with reddish brown hair that keeps it warm. It is two thirds the size of a gorilla and a gorilla is six feet tall. It can weigh up to two hundred pounds and four and a half feet. It has a big head with a prominent mouth. The orangutan without his hair looks like a man. They refer to them as the old man of the forest.

The Bornean Orangutan lives in the tropical forest in Borneo. It lives there because it has lots of trees and it is wet and moist and mostly warm. This ape also lives there because there are lots of trees to climb. In their habitat there are lots of fruit and small animals to eat. They use branches and leaves to build there nests and sometimes they use leaves for a roof.

This Orangutan is a shy animal that hides in trees. During the day this ape is more active. The Bornean Orangutan while hunting swings through the trees really quietly and then it strikes. The biggest threat to an orangutan is man. It protects itself by staying high in the trees. By climbing trees, the orangutan finds fruit, small animals and insects.

There are many other interesting facts about the Bornean Orangutan. The orangutan lifespan is fifty years. This magnificent ape is almost endangered species in 1997 and 1998 a forest fire killed thousands of orangutans, but now it is illegal to kill these endangered apes.

Hopefully someday you can visit Bornean and see an orangutan swinging from trees and witness his mischievous looks and strange behavior.
