How the Polar Bear Came to Be

One day two grizzly bears named Shaya and Iyona were fighting over a fish. Shya won the battle and pushed Iyona in to a roaring river. That river took Iyona to the tundra and in the icy cold water her fur became white and the coldness turned her into a polar bear. She soon adapted to the new land and lived happily on the best fish and seals she ever had.

Aurora Borealis

One day an Inuit decided her tribe needed some brightness in their lives so she went to her igloo and got four pieces of colored crystal ice. Then she went back outside. She held them in her hand and threw them in the sky. All of a sudden Pink, Purple, Green and blue bands of bright light appeared in the sky. They call it the Aurora Borealis.

How Darkness Came to be in Arctic

One day there was a little orphan girl that never got enough attention and not enough food. So one day she met someone, and he asked, "Do you want to get away from the people you're with?" So she thought and thought and finally said, "Yes." So She got what she wanted, but the person tricked her, and the way he tricked her was he made her a sprit away from everyone. So one day she got revenge, and the way she did that she put a spell on all the arctic, and the spell was that every winter it stays dark until summer comes, and that’s the way Darkness came to be in the arctic.

One Mean Spirit

Once upon a time there were Eskimo children. There was a girl named Michelle and a boy named Tom. One day they met a mean spirit named Grumpy. Grumpy did not like children. He was mean and scared them. Michelle and Tom tried to be Grumpy's friend. They wanted to play with him. They were kind to Grumpy. Their plan worked. He became nice and a human. He had a spell because he was being mean. So when he was nice he turned into a human. Then they were glad they made friends.

The Magic Tail

Once there was a whale family that was having a baby. The baby was a human boy and the parents were shocked it was a human. They called Iguanue. The parents found out they would have to kill the boy to make him a whale. So they told their son and Iguanue said, ''Couldn’t I just go out of the water and become a normal human?"

So the parents said, "Yes, but you will grow a tail that will make a sea animal when it comes off.'' The parents said there would have to be more sea animals besides just whales and fish. So Iguanue promised that he would take off his tail and there would be enough sea animals for the Inuit to eat.

Human Polar Bear

Once there was a very good hunter named Makaka that was hunting on his dogsled. Suddenly he saw numerous polar bears, so he told his dogs to turn around. They were going at a fast speed so that when they turned around he fell of the dogsled and landed on a cub. The adult polar bears ripped him apart. He was still alive so he went up to a pingo (a small ice hill) and prayed to the sky god. The god said he would give Makaka the heart of a polar bear. Makaka was changed into a polar bear and never had to be afraid of the fierce polar bears again.

The Orphan

Once upon a time there was an orphan who was a boy. No one cared for him, because they didn't have enough stuff for themselves and only had enough food for them and their children.

So one day the orphan went to a river holding a candle and he ran around saying what he wants to be because no one cares for him. So he said, "Oh powerful one, turn me into a flash of lightning." So by saying this he turned into lightning and when he did he destroyed all the people who didn't care for him.

Daylight

Once upon time when the earth was always dark a boy named Kyana got left behind on the beach from a boat trip. He wanted to punish the men because they would not let him go on the boat trip over the river. Kyana decided to turn into the sun. He took a torch and ran around in circles for many hours. Finally he rose up in to the air and became the sun. He was so angry he burned the men with his blazing fire. He stayed up in the air and shone over the world. He knew the tundra region should stay cold because he didn't want to punish his people. And that's how daylight came to be.

How the Aurora Borealis came to be in the Sky

Inya was the goddess of the sky who had other friends, who were gods. When she was talking to them she said, "We need more color in the sky."

They talked all day about how to get color in the sky. It was too cold to use paint because it would freeze. So the goddesses took all their magic powers and chanted to the sky, but some gods refused to chant. Because of this the sky only lights up with the colors of the aurora borealis every once in a while and not every day.

How Snow came to be

Once there were two kids that were tired of playing in the snow. They had heard about cold white stuff that falls from the sky and is fun to play in. One day they decided to be the gods of snow so they got two candles and lit them. They danced around singing songs about snow. Then they flew up into the sky and became the gods of the snow. They made snow fall all over and that’s how snow came to be.

Why the Arctic Fox eats Lemmings

Artic Fox was napping near a pingo when Lemming came along. "OOOOOH!" cursed Lemming. Arctic Fox Woke up and seeing the enemy he feared most he ran. The next day Arctic Fox decided to take revenge. So he hid near Lemming's burrow. Arctic Fox waited for days, weeks, then months, then years for Lemming to come out but Lemming had burrowed somewhere else. Arctic Fox ate every lemming he could get after that because of his anger. That’s why arctic foxes eat lemmings.

Blue Band of Light

Yampa is a small girl who loved to watch the aurora borealis in the sky. But it was missing her favorite color, which was blue. So she searched for deep blue wild flowers that bloom very briefly in the summer on the tundra. Then she mashed them together. By the time she was finished it was still light out, and she could still see the aurora borealis sparkling in the sky, so she threw the mashed blue wild flowers in the sky, and that is how blue became one of the many colors of the aurora borealis.

Summer and Winter

In the days when no man could hunt because of the cold ice that never seemed to melt in the cold winter that was never to end, one tribe just had enough for a piece of lemming meat a week. There were two children in this tribe, Sendra and Tupic. They had been treated so nicely that they decided to do something good for the people. "I will be winter so you can be summer," said Tupic. Immediately he turned cold and the wind spirits flew about him and he taught the people how to hunt for more meat, while Sendra turned into summer, warm and plentiful with berries that the people could not find in winter. She told the animal spirits to let out lots of animals and she would shine her sun to give some light for the hunters.

How the Whale Came To Be

Long ago, in a far away place Inuit were very hungry so they begged the sea spirit for something to hunt. The sea spirit gave it to them. It was really immense. The whale had a hole on its back and big fins and a huge tail. The Inuit thanked the sea spirit for the whale.
