Dolphins
By Kayla

Dolphins live in all the world’s oceans. They live in caves and coral and also behind seaweed. They eat lots of fish, both little and big. Dolphins propel themselves through the water with their tails, which have two strong wings or flukes. They move their flukes up and down. Dolphins are playful and are from six to thirteen feet long. They like to leap clear out of the water and ride the waves made by boats. Dolphins like to swim in large herds and sometimes there are as many as 1,000 dolphins swimming together. Dolphins warn each other of danger. When danger approaches they send signals. Sometimes they get trapped in fishing nets. If one dolphin is injured they will push it to the surface so it can breathe. A dolphin breathes air through a blowhole on top of its head. When it dives a dolphin closes the blowhole and holds its breath. It can dive as deep as 1,000 feet, but it needs to surface every two minutes to breathe. Dolphins love to roll and play in the waves. They make shallow dives and surface every few minutes. Dolphins play by swimming as a group. Often a whole group will break the surface at the same time. Dolphins can leap as high as 20 feet into the air before diving back into the waves.
