Beverly Sills
May 25, 1929 - July 2, 2007

Belle Miriam Silverman was born on May 25, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her parents, Shirley and Morris Silverman, were immigrants of Russian-Jewish descent. Beverly Sills was an American operatic soprano. A soprano is a person who has a high pitched voice. Beverly was very popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

When she was three, sang singing The Wedding of Jack and Jill on the radio and won "most beautiful baby of 1932." At the age of four she performed on a Saturday morning radio show using the name of Bubbles Silverman, and at the age of seven she sang in a movie. At ten, she was a regular on in the radio show "Our Gal Sunday." She left radio work at 12 to follow her love of Opera.

In 1945 Beverly made her professional stage debut. Famous Broadway producer J.J. Shubert wanted to make her a star. In 1947 she made her operatic stage debut as a Spanish gypsy. Her father died in 1949 and Beverly supported her mother with her singing.

Beverly always wanted to be a member of the New York City Opera and in 1955 she made her debut as Rosalinde in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. She got rave reviews from the critics.

On November 17, 1956 Sills got married to a journalist named Peter Greenough, of the Cleveland, Ohio newspaper The Plain Dealer and moved to Cleveland. She had two children with Greenough, Meredith ("Muffy") in 1959 and Peter Jr. ("Bucky") in 1961. Muffy was deaf and Peter was developmentally disabled. Sills took time off from her singing to take care for her children.

Sills finally made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on April 7, 1975 in The Siege of Corinth, she receiving an eighteen minute ovation. Her autobiography, Bubbles: A Self Portrait was published in 1976 and Bubbles: An Encore was published in 1981, and finally Beverly in 1987. She retired from singing in the 1980’s to become co-director of the New York City Opera.

Beverly Sills made opera popular. Beverly helped change the traditional image of opera. She appeared on The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Dick Cavett and she even hosted The Tonight Show. In 1991, she joined the board of the Metropolitan Opera and in 1995 she became head of Lincoln Center.

In 2006 Peter Greenough, Sills’ husband died on September 6, 2006, at the age of 89.They would had been their 50th anniversary on November 17, 2006.

On July 2, 2007 Beverly Sills died of lung cancer she 78 when she died. Has her daughter has been beside when she just died in front of her.
