Diana Ross

Diana was born on March 26, 1944 in the Brewster housing project in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children. She sang in the choir at the local Baptist church as a child. She sometimes sang on street corners and at school talent shows. In 1959 she joined Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown in a group called the Primettes. In 1961 Diana, Mary and Florence signed a record contract with Motown Records and changed their name to the Supremes. They had their first #1 hit in July 1964, "Where Did Our Love Go." In 1967 they became Diana Ross and the Supremes and in 1970 she left the Supremes. 

She started to act in movies in 1972. She earned an academy award nomination for Lady Sings the Blues. She also starred in The Wiz in 1978.

Diana Ross sings, that is her job and life. The Supremes made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. They had 12 number one singles and sold over 50 million records. On her own she recorded 31 albums and more than 50 singles.
