Michelle Obama

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (January 17, 1964- ) was born in Chicago, Illinois and is married to Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States. Michelle Obama had an older brother. She has two children, Sasha and Malia. When President Obama took office Malia was 11 years old while Sasha was 6 years old.

Michelle Obama graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. Michelle was such a good student she skipped second grade and in sixth-grade she joined a gifted class at Bryn Mawr Elementary School (currently Bouchet Academy). She attended Whitney Young High School, Chicago’s first magnet high school. She was on the honor roll for four years, took advanced placement classes, was also a member of the National Honor Society, and served as student council treasurer. She was also a classmate of Santita Jackson, the daughter of Jesse Jackson and sister of Jesse Jackson Jr. Michelle Obama graduated from high school in 1981. She went on to college and studied sociology and African American Studies at Princeton University.

 

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama started their relationship at a business lunch while they both worked for a law firm in Chicago. They went to a community organization meeting where Barack Obama impressed her. Their first date was to the movie, Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee. Michelle Obama married Barack Obama in October 1992.

 

Before becoming first lady, Michelle was an attorney and an associate dean at the University of Chicago.

 

Throughout her husband’s 2008 campaign for President of the United States of America, she made a commitment that she would be away overnight once a week.
