Dorothea Dix
(1802 - 1887)

dix.jpeg (24734 bytes)Dorothea Dix became the Union's Superintendent of all women nurses working in army hospitals during the Civil War. She was born in 1802. She recruited nurses for the army during the Civil War. She only hired women that were plain and she was called "Dragon Dix" by some people. She died in 1887. She worked for over 20 years to improve the treatment for mentally ill people and better conditions in prisons.
