Most Americans are still living on farms, and
the building of cities is just beginning. Petroleum production begins in the
Middle East, and the Grand Canyon National Park is established by Theodore
Roosevelt. Mother's Day is observed for the very first time, the
Olympics lead many athletes to fame, and the FBI has just been established.
This year, of course, is 1908.
- The Grand
Canyon National Park Monument is established by Theodore Roosevelt.
- The Supreme Court sustains Oregon’s
ten-hour day law for women in industry February 4 in Muller
v. State of Oregon. This means that women can only work for ten hours in
one day.
- At the Olympic
Games 2,666 contestants play in London from April 27 - October 31.
Contestants come from 22 countries.
- The Model
T Ford is introduced August 12 and will soon outsell all other
motorcars. It costs $850.50 and is built with a wooden body on a steel
frame. One consumer said that the car is "stronger than a horse and
easier to maintain." Their only color that it comes in is black.
- W.C. Durant, who brings other automakers
together into a holding company, creates General
Motor September 16. His bankers tell him that Henry Ford’s company is
not worth the $8 million in cash that Ford demands, so Ford does not join.
- The Wright
Brothers complete a flying
machine for the War Department. Tragically it crashes September 17,
injuring Orville Wright and killing Lieut.
Thomas A. Selfridge, who becomes the first aviation fatality.
- The World
Series is won on October 14 when the Chicago Cubs by defeating the
Detroit Tigers four games to one.
- In November, President
William Taft, 50, of Cincinnati easily defeats his Democratic rival
William Jennings Bryan (who runs for the third and last time), winning 321
electoral votes to 162 for the "Great Commoner."
- Wilbur
Wright wins the Michelin Cup in France by completing a 77-mile flight.
The flight took place on December 21 and lasted in 2 hours, 20 minutes.
- Popular song "Take
Me Out to the Ball Game" by Albert von Tilzer, lyrics by Jack
Norworth, becomes popular among baseball fans.
- Kykuit,
a mansion made of fieldstone is built in Pocantico Hills, N.Y., for Standard
Oil millionaire John
D. Rockefeller, Sr.
- The
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is established as a division of
the Department of Justice and will be used in many cases against labor
organizers.
