You don't think of 1907 as a year to
remember. There weren't many events that happened that were famous. However,
many things were founded and invented that we still see today! For example, Pepsi-Cola
sales increase when Pepsi established a network of 40 bottling plants.
Sears, Roebuck distributes more than 3 million copies of its fall catalog. The
University of California and the University of Hawaii are founded. A. P.
Halfhill packs the first canned tuna fish at San Pedro, Calif. As you can tell,
1907 was a year of great change.
- One June 7 the S.S.
Lusitania, is launched. She will begin her maiden voyage on
September 7. The 31,550-ton Lusitania is 790 feet in length overall
with four screws, can carry 2,000 passengers and a crew of 600, and is by
far the largest liner afloat
- On July 8, the Barnum & Bailey Circus
created in 1881 becomes the Ringling
Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus. Albert C. Ringling, 55, and his
brothers Otto, 49, Alfred T., 45, Charles, 44, and John, 41, have purchased
"The Greatest Show on Earth" and will continue touring it round
the country.
- On September 10, Neiman-Marcus
opens in Dallas, and its first stocks are practically sold out in 4 weeks.
The store was founded by former Atlanta advertising agency president A. L.
Neiman, his wife Carrie, and his brother-in-law Herbert Marcus. Carrie
Neiman stocked the store with tailored suits, evening gowns, furs, coats,
and dresses worth for the women of Dallas.
- On October 1, New York’s Plaza
Hotel opens on the Grand Army Plaza, just south of Central Park. It was
built on top of a site that was occupied before by the Vanderbilt mansion.
- Rube
Goldberg starts work with the New York Evening Journal to begin a 60
year career as a cartoonist. His cartoons depicted complex
"inventions" to solve simple problems.
- Eugene Schuller, a French chemist, founded L'Oreal
by inventing hair dye.
- J. Murray Spangler invents the first
electric vacuum
cleaner. W. H. "Boss" Hoover, bought the patent
for Spangler’s "suction" machine and the Hoover is born.
- Maytag
introduces the first wooden tub washing machine.
- Canada
Dry Pale Ginger Ale is registered as a trademark by John J. McLaughlin.
He has eliminated the dark brown color of his Belfast Style Ginger Ale and
has also eliminated the sharpness found in other ginger ales. McLaughlin
calls his product "the Champagne of Ginger Ales."
- Oklahoma
is admitted to the Union as the 46th state.
- Nearly 1.29 million immigrants enter the
United States, a new record that will not be surpassed. On April 17, 1907,
on Ellis Island, a record was set
when 11,747 immigrants arrived.
- Taximeter cabs imported from Paris appear
in New York City on May 31 to give the United States its first successors to
hansom cabs.
- Bakelite,
a type of plastic, was invented by Leo Baekelan.
