In the year 1906 many events occurred. There were also many discoveries and new
rules. Some of these events helped the society. However, many of the events hurt
the society of the United Sates. For example, for example, the San Francisco
earthquake and fire which killed 2,500 people and injured many more. Also, the
Brownsville Texas riot was one of the events in the United States history that
proved there was a need to end racism. However, one thing that helped was the
discovery of how the Rocky Mountain spotted fever was spread. It was spread by
the cow tick. Scientists were able to find medicines to help people with the
disease and were able to protect people from the tick bite.
- The British warship H.M.S.
Dreadnaught is launched in February. It was one of the most advanced
warships of that time. It had ten 12-inch guns, the biggest and most big
guns at that time.
- Mount
Vesuvius erupts in Italy on April 10.
- On April 18 the San
Francisco earthquake shook California. The death toll was about 2500
with the combination of the quake and the fire. The quake also did a lot of
damage to many different buildings. Apartment buildings, business buildings,
and other types of homes were destroyed. The damage cost about $25 million.
It destroyed all the city’s Nob Hill mansions with the exception of the
20-year-old $1 million house of silver king James C. Flood.
- An August riot in Brownsville,
Texas occurs when a few members of the 25th Infantry supposedly shot one
person and raped a woman.
- An all Chicago
World Series battle ends with the White Sox victorious.
- The first voice and music
are broadcasted
in Brant Rock, Massachusetts on Christmas Eve. The machine was patented in
1901 but started working in 1906.
- President Roosevelt
gathers leaders in college
athletics to the White House in December to consider a new set of rules
for college football. He was trying to make the game safer. The 1905 season
resulted in 18 deaths. the organization would later become the National
Collegiate Athletic Association.
- Planters
Nut and Chocolate Company is founded.
- The "hot
dog" gets its name from a cartoon by cartoonist Thomas Dorgan who
shows a dachshund inside a frankfurter bun.
- U.S. pathologist Howard
Taylor Ricketts discovers that Rocky Mountain spotted fever is transmitted
by the bite of a cattle tick;
the toxin will be called Rickettsia.
- Rolls
Royce is incorporated by Charles
Rolls and Henry Royce.
They also built the Silver Ghost the same year.
- Mesa
Verde National Park in Colorado is created.
