Course Description

The maintenance and development of good health is basic to all of our lives.  Adolescents need accurate health information in order to develop healthy attitudes and behavior patterns.  High school students reaching maturity are beginning to assume responsibility for their own health.  They must make choices and decisions that may affect them throughout their lives.  Health Education offers knowledge and skills that enable a student to make choices and decisions based upon accurate and current information.  The goal of this course is to enable the students to assess their own lifestyles and risks and to choose behaviors that are healthy and responsible.

Units Covered

The New York State Health Education syllabus and standards include:

                        Psychological Health                             Cancer

Parenting                                              Aging/Death and Dying

CPR ARC Certification                        Relationships and Communication

First Aid ARC Certification                   Sexuality

Classroom assignments and discussions on various current topics are incorporated into daily lessons.

Classroom Expectations

School and classroom expectations are consistent with those in the Student Handbook.  In addition, it is important that every student respects the values, opinions, ideas, and differences in each other at all times.  Anything but acceptance and respect will not be tolerated at any time.  Since a positive learning environment is the key to success in every classroom, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and will adversely influence the student’s overall grade.

Materials Needed

1.      One Subject Notebook

2.      Folder/binder – there will be a lot of handouts given during class.

3.      Loose-leaf paper

Homework/Classroom Assignments

Homework is always due the day after it is assigned. Other assignments are to be completed by the given due date.  Late work will not be accepted and will receive a failing grade.  A separate handout will be distributed that will list specific assignment due dates.  These assignments will also be on the school website in the Health Department page.  Students are responsible for handing in their assignments on time.

Baby Project

Part of a semester grade will be to care for a “baby” for a weekend.  Sign up sheets will be available for all students to select a weekend that they will care for their “child”.  All efforts will be made to accommodate special family situations if they do arise during the course of the semester.  This is not an optional activity, all students must participate.

Final Exam

This course will culminate in a final comprehensive exam.

Grading

Quarter grades are based upon completion of journals (20%) articles (10%), tests (60%), quizzes (5%) and participation (including behavior and attendance) (5%).

I have read this syllabus and understand what is expected during this Health Course.
