Global History and Geography 9 HonorsMrs. Mancini
Course Description Global History and Geography 9 Honors is the first year of a two-year sequence culminating in the Global History and Geography Regents exam in June of sophomore year. All students enrolled in this course are required to take the Regents exam. A chronological approach is used in Global History and Geography. The ninth grade studies the political, economic, religious, social and cultural systems of the peoples of Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America from prehistory to the Scientific Revolution. The Global History and Geography Honors course involves a higher level of work. More in depth writing assignments will be given; reading will be critically oriented and a greater degree of analysis and synthesis is expected.
New York State Social Studies StandardsThe five social studies standards: History of the United States and New York; World History; Geography; Economics; Civics, citizenship and government are incorporated into the discussions and analyses of the course as they appear in the chronology.
Classroom ExpectationsStudents are expected to arrive to class promptly and to have with them the necessary materials. Students should act in a socially acceptable manner, demonstrating respect for self, for peers, the instructor and school property.
Textbook/Supplementary MaterialsWorld History: Patterns of Interaction. Beck, Roger B., et. al. Supplemental materials include appropriate paperback books, maps, films, dvds, and videocassettes.
SuppliesLoose-leaf binder for class notes and homeworkPocket Folder for handouts Colored pencils for map work Blue/black ink pens Pocket dictionary Homework Homework, when and where possible, should be done at home. It should be done in blue/black ink and contain the proper heading. All questions must be answered in complete sentences. Homework must be handed in the class period it is due. Assignments not handed in on time will not be accepted. Parents will be called after three missed assignments.
TestingTests are always announced in advance. If a test is missed due to absence, a makeup test should be scheduled for the day after returning to school. If the student missed the material, the instructor will provide him/her with the work missed. Tests must be made up as per the Student Handbook. All makeup tests will be administered only during the activity period.
Grading PolicyQuarter grades will be computed as follows: Tests 80% Homework, Participation/Motivation 20%
The final grade will be computed as follows: Average of quarter grades 70% Mid Term Exam 15% Final Exam 15%
ProjectsProjects may be assigned from time to time. Projects will be evaluated on historical content, research, neatness, originality, creativity, and where appropriate, group participation. Projects can take many forms and will be assigned well in advance of the due date. Projects not handed in on the due date will not be accepted.
AttendanceThe student must be in class when scheduled. Absences and lateness will be recorded as per district policy. (Consult Student Handbook for details.) Any student who cuts class will have three (3) points deducted from his/her quarter average for each class cut.
