M. Martini AP French I. Course Description: Upon successful completion of the French IV/V course, serious students of French are recommended to the Advanced Placement French Language course. This course is designed to precision the listening, speaking, reading and writing of French on an intermediate college level and is taught entirely in French. II. Goals: Students will be trained to perform successfully on the AP French language exam through listening to authentic French media, speaking extemporaneous and impromptu conversations, reading authentic French authors and réalités, and writing lengthy essays on a wide variety of topics. III. Classroom Expectations and Requirements: Students are expected to be on time, participate actively in class, and bring all necessary materials to class every day. Students are expected to behave in a respectful manner at all times. Students are expected to speak French in all AP French interaction. IV. Textbook and Materials: The AP French textbook is Connaissances et Réactions, which students must bring to class every day along with a notebook for French class only and a pen. Students will also need an audiocassette with access to a recorder, a French/English dictionary for use during the first semester and a French/French dictionary that will be provided for the second semester. Supplementary materials include the series workbook as well as AP French: Preparing for the French Language Exam which will be distributed along with the textbook. V. Topics: Thematic units cover daily life activities, world problems, leisure time activities, the fine arts, politics, industry, cuisine, fashion, inventions, and the francophone world. A thorough review of French grammar is presented as well as cultural readings on the history of France throughout the centuries. Students will also read L’Etranger by Albert Camus Le Petit Prince by St. Exupery, Huis Clos by Jean-Paul Sartre and selections of poetry by Jacques Prévert. VI. Testing & Grading: Homework will constitute 10% of each quarterly grade. Class work will constitute 10% of the quarterly grade. Chapter tests, compositions, magazine article reviews, cassette recordings, group conversations and sketches as well as projects on the four literary units will constitute 80% of the quarterly grade. All exams are modeled after the AP exam format. VII. Progress Reports: At the midpoint of each quarter, all students receive progress reports in order to inform parents of the student's effort and accomplishments. VIII. Extra Help: Students who seek mentoring are encouraged to come during activity period or free time.
