Course Expectation Sheet Sixth Grade Math Course Description:
The sixth grade curriculum follows the syllabus recommended by the New York State Education Department. The major topics that we will study are:
Whole Number Operations Decimals, Fractions, Mixed Numbers Ratio, Proportion, Probability Percents Measurement and Geometry Graphing and Statistics Coordinate Geometry Area, Perimeter, Volume
Text Book/Supplementary Material:
Text – Harcourt Math, Harcourt School Publishers Workbook(s) – Harcourt Math (Practice Wkbk. and Challenge Wkbk.) NYS COACH (Standards-Based Practice)
Supplies:
Red Five Subject Notebook (notes / practice); Red Marble Notebook (MRJ) Students are expected to come to class with a notebook, workbook, pencil, accordion folder, and an assignment pad (“Think Five”).
Classroom Expectations:
It is very important for each student to be prepared for class and on time. Respect for the teacher and fellow students is expected. Students are required to show all work when appropriate and participation in class is encouraged. Class rules will follow P.A.W.S. (Positive, Accountable, Well-Mannered, Safe)
Homework:
Written homework is assigned 3 - 4 times a week. It is important that each student complete the given assignment(s), as homework is checked daily and reviewed in class. It is highly encouraged that the students show their work and are prepared to share their thinking with the class during this time. Homework should take anywhere between 15 - 20 minutes to complete.

Extra Help:
Students are asked to stay for extra help during activity period (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Other arrangements can be made such as lunch time or early morning if needed.
How can you help?
Progress Reporting:
Phone Calls / e-mail Progress Report Sheet Unit tests/quizzes will be sent home to be signed (approx. 5 / quarter). This will help keep parents informed of their child’s current status.
Grading Policy and Procedures:
Assessments take the form of quizzes, tests, homework, projects, class participation, and teacher observation. Test grades will be weighed twice when averaging a final quarter grade. Project grades are similar to quiz grades, as they are both weighed once when calculating an average. (85% Tests/Quizzes, 10% Personal Responsibility, 3% Evidence of Critical Thinking, 2% Motivation/Initiative)
