COURSE EXPECTATION SHEET

COURSE: Home Skills (Grade 7) TEACHER: Ms. Shillito

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Home Skills is a Regents mandated course. In seventh grade, the focus of the course is on acquiring knowledge and ability in using the process skills of decision making, problem solving and management. The students learn to apply these skills in the content areas of personal development, consumer skills and money management, nutrition, meal planning, personal environment and career awareness and planning. This course is designed to enhance the students’ ability to deal more constructively and safely with their own life situations in their homes, communities and work settings, both in the present and for the future.

TEXT BOOK/SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS:

The text book, Teen Living, may be used occasionally during class. Photo copied materials will be introduced as needed.

SUPPLIES:

Students will need to bring the following materials to class:

A white floppy 3-ring binder
5 dividers with tabs (Please do not label these, we will label them in class)
Lined loose leaf paper
Pen and pencil
The student’s name should be written on or inside the front cover of the binder.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Students are required to take notes in class, complete all assigned class work and keep all information organized neatly in their binders. Tests and quizzes may be given occasionally, based on readings, labs, student’s research and/or class discussion. Homework may be assigned several times/week. There will be projects and labs assigned during the year that will require time management planning. This course requires a teamwork approach to learning.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

Students must be punctual and responsible.
Students must listen and work quietly in class.
Students must cooperate and participate.
Students must help keep their classrooms clean.
Students must show respect at all times.

PROGRESS REPORTS:

Interim notices will be sent home as needed.

GRADING POLICY AND PROCEDURES:

This is a pass/fail course. Grades will be assigned as follows:

Pass with honors 90% - 100%

Pass 80% - 89%

Satisfactory 70% - 79%

Unsatisfactory 65% - 69%

Fail 64% or lower

Grades are based on a combination of test and quiz grades, successful completion of assigned class work/labs, homework, projects and class participation. Special consideration will be given for effort, attention to detail, creativity, and timely submission of work. All group work will have an individual component.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT/RUBRICS:

Students will be assessed on comprehension and application of knowledge and skills which have been reviewed in the classroom. Rubrics are used to assess special projects and labs.

HOMEWORK:

Homework may be assigned several times/week. All homework must be submitted in a timely manner. Five (5) points will be deducted for every day it is late. Class work that is not completed during class time must be completed that night for homework.

 

AFTER SCHOOL HELP:

I am available for help after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Arrangements must be made ahead of time if the student needs help after school on any other day. Please feel free to contact me.
