COURSE EXPECTATION SHEET COURSE: Home Skills (Grade 6) TEACHER: Ms. Shillito COURSE DESCRIPTION: In sixth grade, the focus of this course is on acquiring basic sewing skills, improving eye/hand coordination, applying basic math skills, reading carefully and following directions. The ultimate goal is to improve self-esteem and self-awareness. This course meets every day for approximately eight weeks. TEXT BOOK/SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS Photo copied materials will be introduced as needed. SUPPLIES Students will need to bring the following materials to class: Pair of shears/scissors (appropriate for cutting fabric)A package of s ewing needles (sharps or embroidery)A box of s traight pinsThread , any two colors (one dark and one light)Needle thread erSeam ripper Box to store supplies (A large boot or shoe box is good. Students need extra space to put their projects in once they arrive.)The student’s name should be written on all supplies and on the storage box. COURSE REQUIREMENTS There are no quizzes or tests. Students are expected to complete the project on time. They are also required to complete a "Success Time Line" based on the number of steps required to complete their project. Home Skills is a "hands-on" course. Emphasis is placed upon the active participation of students in class. Additional projects may be assigned if students complete their projects before the end of the quint. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Students must be in class on time with all necessary supplies. Students must remain in their seats.Students must work quietly.Students must follow all safety rules.Students must clean up their area of the room at the end of each class.Students are expected to keep up with their timelines by checking them at the beginning of each class. Students who begin to fall behind on their work need to make plans immediately to catch up during one or more of the activity periods. PROGRESS REPORTS Interim notices will be sent home as needed. GRADING POLICY AND PROCEDURES This is a pass/fail course. Pass with honors 90% - 100% Pass 80% - 89% Satisfactory 70% - 79% Unsatisfactory 65% - 69% Fail 64% or lower Grades are based on the completion of assigned work (time line and sewing project) . The sewing project is graded based on a rubric. AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT/RUBRICS The students projects will be assessed for comprehension and application of knowledge and skills which have been reviewed in the classroom (by rubric specific to project type). AFTER SCHOOL HELP I am available for help after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Arrangements must be made ahead of time if the student needs help after school on a Friday or later than 3PM on Monday -Thursday.
