COURSE DESCRIPTION

Health Education is designed to promote wellness, encourage lifelong health habits, and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed choices regarding health risks and healthy behaviors.  It encourages personal responsibility for healthy choices as a young person begins to move towards adulthood and independence.

 Topics Covered:

Family Life Education                         Emotional and Mental Health

Disease Prevention                                 Safety and First Aid

Personal Health Practices                          Substance Use and Abuse

TEXT BOOK

There is no text book for this class.  Materials are used from a variety of sources that are current for each topic discussed.

SUPPLIES

Students are responsible for having a folder for all class materials and handouts that will be distributed.  You are expected to bring a pen and a small supply of lined paper to class everyday.  At the end of the quint and perhaps the middle, contents of your folder will be collected. 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Students are expected to complete all assignments on time.  Many assignments ask students to express their own thoughts, feelings and values.  Therefore, a grade of pass/fail will be given for this course.  If the assignment is completed as expected, it will receive a 100%.  If it is not completed by the date it is due, or if it is unsatisfactory, it will receive a 50%.  Assignments not done will receive a 0%.  The overall average of these grades will determine your final class grade. 

GRADING

Pass with honors                    90% - 100%

Pass                                 80% - 89%

Satisfactory                     70% - 79%

Unsatisfactory                65% - 69%

Fail                                  64% or lower

 

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to follow all school rules.  You are expected to come to class prepared with all necessary materials.  Most importantly, you are expected to contribute to a classroom climate that fosters mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s values, opinions, ideas, and differences.  An open and comfortable classroom climate encourages discussion in analyzing healthy behaviors.

 

PROGRESS REPORTS

Interim notices will be sent home as needed.

 

HOMEWORK

Homework is given if class work is not completed.  Homework assignments will not be accepted late; they will always be due the next day.

 

EXTRA HELP

I am available for help after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Arrangements must be made ahead of time if the student needs help after school on any other day or at any other time.  Please feel free to contact me whenever necessary.
