ANNE M. DORNER Approximately 800 students in sixth through eighth grade attend the Anne M. Dorner Middle School which has been recognized by the United States Secretary of Education as a National School of Excellence. In order to ease the transition from elementary to high school, a guidance counselor is assigned to each grade and remains with that group of students throughout the Middle School. Students are assigned to academic, interdisciplinary teams of teachers, which encourages a close student-teacher relationship. Beginning in grade 6, honors programs are offered in math and science. Beginning in grade 7, students begin modern language studies in one of three languages: French, Italian, or Spanish. In eighth grade, high school level accelerated courses are offered in Regents Earth Science, Sequential Math 1, and Level 1 of a modern language. Students can expect to make use of a fully equipped computer laboratory. A comprehensive arts program consists of classroom music and art, orchestra, band, chorus, and an after school jazz ensemble. Occupational education (technology and home and career skills programs) is offered along with an extensive program of extracurricular club and intramural activities.
