The Accelerated Reader Program

This year we are initiating a new incentive reading system called the Accelerated Reader.  This is a computer managament reading system that awards points to students once they have read a book and passed a comprehension quiz.  It is our hope that the school will attain 10,000 points by the end of March.  If that does happen, Mr. Meyer has promised to meet the challenge by performing an adventurous activity to celebrate the accomplishment.

Grades 2-5 will be participating in this new computer management incentive program.  Although kindergarten and first grade students will not be taking quizzes at this time, every ten books that you read to them or with them will count for one point.  "Parents as Reading Partners" will be the main thrust for the early grades' campaign and those books will add up to points quickly.

All Austin road students will be eligible to become a member of the 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, and perhaps the 500 point club.  They will have their names proudly displayed on the front lobby bulletin boards to recognize their efforts, and will receive a button to wear.

The bottom line is that our students will be reading more and improving their vocabulary, comprehension, rate of reading, enjoyment, and interest in reading as a leisure time activity.  They will truly take flight with reading and hopefully develop a life long habit as they explore the world of books.

The school library has many of the books on the accelerated reader list (see below) and will be ordering more.  Classroom teachers are busy putting together their collections of favorites from the list, and the reading teachers are ordering some extra classroom collections.

Remember, too, the public library is aware of this program and has a list of books on file.  If you ask for help in selecting books from the list, they will be more than happy to provide assistance.  Do not forget this important resource in our community!  It is open when the schools are not, so your children can be reading during school breaks.  Please encourage them to do so by reminding them of the Accelerated Reader Challenge of 10,000 points by the end of March.  Of course, we will be reading and collecting points until the end of the year.  he PTA has graciously agreed tocontinue this reading momentum through a PTA sponsored "Parents as Reading Partners Project".  Stay tuned for the details this Spring!
