PRESENT: Ellen Afromsky, Rebecca Albrecht, Patrisha Bronzell, Trudy Duschaneck, Michael Greenfield, Sandra Hile, Maureen Irwin, Kathleen McArdle, Mary Alice O'Brien, RDC, Linda Puskar, Judith Rovenger, Bruce Seiden and Marina Thomas.
Francene C. Costello, School Library System Director, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone to the beginning of the 2004 - 2005 school year. Each of the Council members introduced themselves and spoke briefly about the position, he/she currently holds.
Council elections for the Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary were held according to the by-laws of the School Library System. Unanimously elected were Lois Izes, Council Chair, Trudy Duschaneck, Council Vice-Chair and Kathleen McArdle, Secretary.
Based on requests from school library media specialists, the elementary and secondary librarians' groups will continue with each group having four meetings per year. Lois Izes and Marina Thomas will co-chair the elementary librarians group, and Kathleen McArdle will chair the secondary librarians group. Meeting dates are posted on the School Library System website.
Council members reviewed the eight elements of the School Library System Plan of Service 2004 - 2005, along with the goals and accompanying activities. The Plan of Service 2001 - 2006 outlines the focus for the School Library System on a yearly basis.
The 2003 - 2004 Library Services and Technology Act Grant, New Century Libraries, The Next Generation, ends on September 30, 2004. The final report is due for submission on October 30th with the New York State Library, Division of Library Development. Twelve websites have been developed and published to the web (http://www.libweb2.org) through the collaboration of twenty-six teachers and school librarians.
The School Library System was awarded a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) NOVEL Invitational Grant for $6,000. These funds will be used to design and implement a training program that will further familiarize library media specialists and their classroom teacher colleagues with the resources of the NOVEL (New York Virtual Electronic Library), as well as other local and regional databases. Workshops will be presented by trainers from Thomson-Gale and EBSCO, as well as Pam Berger, educational consultant.
Submission for an LSTA grant 2005 - 2007 is due November 5th. This is the first time that grants have been offered for more than one year.
On September 22nd, the School Library System sponsored an all day workshop at Manhattanville College. Over fifty school library media specialists and administrators attended @ Your Library featuring Pam Berger. Mr. Ronald Smalls, Superintendent of Southern Westchester BOCES, spoke to the audience on the importance of good school library media programs and presented Electronic Doorway Recognition certificates to those individuals whose libraries had achieved that distinction. Ms. Berger addressed the issues of advocacy, specifically at the local and regional levels.
Upcoming activities of the School Library System include a Visual Thesaurus Webinar on September 30th, the Elementary Librarians meeting on October 12th and Database Training on October 15th. The Westchester Library Association is hosting its semi-annual conference, Fall into WLA, on November 5th at the Yonkers Public Library, Riverfront Branch.
Judith Rovenger, Youth Services Consultant, Westchester Library System, spoke on the Washington Irving Children's Choice Book Award. This award was established in 1982 to honor Westchester authors and illustrators. The books are nominated by a committee of public and school librarians and then children in grades K - 8 are invited to vote for their favorites. Children are encouraged to read all the books in each category before voting and may vote in more than one category. Voting must be completed by Election Day and the winners will be announced during Children's Book Week, November 15 - 21, 2004.
Information on the IMLS (the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services) state grant, Making It REAL! Recruitment, Education and Learning was distributed.
