Matter Matters


Introduction

Does it matter how much you know about MATTER?

You have been hired as a scientist for Kent Elementary School. You will become an expert on different types of matter and be ready to share your information with anyone in the school.

Task

Your job is to complete a MATTER CHART. It will consist of filling in information about the states of matter. You will also need to answer some general questions about matter.

Process

You will work as a team taking turns with the mouse.

Use the sites above to become "Matter Specialists".
Be ready to answer the following questions:
 
  1. What is matter?
  2. What are the phases of matter?
  3. Use your own words to describe each phase of matter.
  4. Give an example of each phase of matter.
  5. Fill in the correct information on the Matter Chart.
  6. Create a poster illustrating the different phases of matter. Be sure to label phases clearly.
  7. Using the web site Chem4kids, answer the questions on the MATTER POP QUIZ with your team.
  8. Extra credit!

    What phase of matter would you like to be? Write a paragraph describing what life would be like as this state of matter. Illustrate.


    Evaluation

    1. Did you answer all the questions using the sites?
    2. Did you work cooperatively on your team?
    3. Did you fill out your Matter Chart accurately?
    4. Is your poster labeled and illustrated?
    5. Check your teammates' writing for neatness, spelling and accuracy.

    Conclusion

    You have completed your training to become a "Matter Scientist." You may now go out and be a turnkey agent to teach other students in Kent Elementary School. Good luck in your quest and may the force be with you!!
