WaterWorld
| THE PROGRAM: WaterWorld is
a program that combines traditional research on water
pollution and the creation of a Public Service Advertise
ment (PSA). The goals of WaterWorld are to: raise
awareness among students of water problems; provide
traditional and creative ways to express solutions; share
these problems and solutions with the community. Groups of students design a Public Service Announcement. PSA provide possible solutions to water pollution problems. The groups concentrate their research on a specific water problem (ex: landfills, acid rain, oil spills ...) then prepare a traditional research paper. Then, they desig n a PSA poster with original slogans and drawings summing-up their research. Two-minute "commercials" are videotaped by the students or teacher. The edited versions of the tapes are then broadcast on local school channels to share with the community at large. Students at Eastchester also designed a web page that included some of the best PSA posters and research. A guidebook / logbook was designed to steer students through the project. An environmental engineer from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was a guest speaker and gave vital expert information. THE STUDENTS: This project was piloted with 90 eighth graders with a wide range of abilities (honors - special education). It can be easily adapted for all abilities in grades 5-9. THE STAFF: Julie Ann Hugick, Earth Science Teacher at Eastchester Middle School developed WaterWorld. Support from the Art teacher (poster help) and the Computer teacher (WWW access) made this program a success. Library specialists and the AV crew can help with imple mentation. MATERIALS AND FACILITIES: Video-recorder, blank video tapes, poster supplies, school and public library and World Wide access (if possible). OUTSIDE RESOURCES: Visit to public library by students is critical. An Environmental engineer as a guest speaker is enriching. |
OVERALL VALUE: WaterWorld
