Shop Cook and Listen

THE PROGRAM: Shop, Cook and Listen around the world is an interdisciplinary program in which each child is given $5.00 to research a recipe that is native to their country. They then must make a shopping list, study newspaper ads for prices, shop, follow directions, plan and prepare this dish at home. The student then brings the dish into school and explains how the food was prepared. The recipe is then written on the blackboard and copied by the rest of the class. The food is served and tasted by everyone. The class goes to the computer room and each child creates his own international cookbook of classroom recipes. These cookbooks and foods can be shared with other classes and families.

THE STUDENTS: Twenty-five heterogeneously grouped beginning level E.S.L. students in 7-9th grades participate in this program. The common factor among these students is their minimal understanding of English. Shop, Cook and Listen is easily adaptable and can be imple mented in almost any classroom.

THE STAFF: This project was developed by Arlene Schwartz an E.S.L. teacher and previous Impact Adapter Award and Impact Developer Award recipient. She serves as an Adjunct Professor at Bergen Community College and has also taught adults at BOCES.

MATERIALS & FACILITIES: Paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware, pot holders, serving utensils, newspapers, oven, computer room.

OUTSIDE RESOURCES: Use of the library for cookbooks and the computer room for typing the recipes, watching cooking shows on T.V., and visiting the supermarket. A local demonstration by a chef at the mall would also be useful.

OVERALL VALUE: This is a program that the children enjoy and is therefore motivating. A great deal of learning takes place. Shop, Cook and Listen reinforces oral language, written language, and vocabulary development. It encourages sequencing, predicting, problem solving and

following directions. Reading, mathematics, nutrition and culture are developed through practical application. It gives students an opportunity to learn a new language using all five senses. Also, the students learn how to budget, shop, read newspaper ads, and develop life and social skills as well.
