Reverse Inclusion: Stop Sitting on the Fence and Come on in
| THE PROGRAM: Reverse
Inclusion: Stop Sitting On The Fence And Come On In
is a multi-faceted program which not only gives the
special education student a taste of cooperative
learning, but gives the mainstreamed student an awareness
of real life education in the handicapped world. With the
growing emphasis on inclusion, it is important to make
the school's population aware of disability before you
start to initiate or integrate a child into a
mainstreamed program. Materials and Facilities: Videos, library books, distinctive tasting foods, pictures from magazines, experience chart stories, arts and crafts materials, big books and professional pictures on sensitivity. Outside Resources: Guest speakers from the community in the field of special education, local book depository, and support from companies and agencies in the area (McDonalds) etc. The Students: The students are from Lime Kiln Elementary School in the 4th -6th grades, as well as a developmentally delayed class. The range is "at risk" to high academic. The Staff: The two programs (creative writing and sensitivity training), were initiated and imple mented eight years ago at Lime Kiln School by Eunice Schwartz. Eunice has been a special education teacher for 32 years. She has won two Impact II Awards and was also nominated for New York State Teacher of the Year in 1994. Over-all Value: Given the premise that children who are exposed to learning about the disabled will then be able to include them in the mainstreamed class, the reversal inclusion program will continue to be successful. Through evaluation and follow-up data, mainstreamed children have shown that they are more understanding of the special education child and more aware of their problems in society. These programs should be adapted by any school, public or private, so that each child becomes "aware" and won't feel afraid of these children. |
