District Mission Statement: to create a vibrant learning community

September 2009

To All Hastings High School Students,

Welcome back to the 2009-20010 school year.  I hope everyone is off to a great start.  As the Youth Employment Service (YES) Director for the Village of Hastings, I hope to get to know all of you and help you find the perfect employment, volunteer or internship experience.  Whether you need to earn money to pay your expenses, want an interesting and constructive way to spend your time, or need a great experience to add to your college resume, the YES Office can help.  PLEASE FILL OUT A NEW APPLICATION, even if you gave me one last year – don’t forget to update your “experiences.”  A current YES Application is required to be placed for any jobs during the school year.

I have already received several requests from perspective employers seeking students to work.  I have openings for babysitting after school, homework supervision and tutoring, and many new requests will be coming in shortly.  Last year Hastings students worked in many varied jobs including: restaurant staff, babysitting, computer training, website development, video-taping, party photographers, party aides, dental assistant, retail stores, home organizing, yard work, snow removal, eBay-selling, tutoring, pet caretakers, senior citizen companions, lifeguards, camp counselors, golf course workers and many more.   If you have your own idea of what you want to do, I will help make it happen.  Fill out the attached application/questionnaire and return it to me.  You can leave it in my mailbox, but I will need to meet with you in person.

I am in the new YES Office which is NOW LOCATED up the staircase in the Library (the Crow’s Nest), on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please drop by or call me at 478-6266.   My email address is iturbej@hastings.k12.ny.us. (include a clear subject line so I know it is legit and not spam!)  Listen for my morning announcements and be sure to check the YES Bulletin Board which is just inside the Library, for job postings.  Feel free to post job/volunteer position requests as well.  I have store applications, YES applications, and information you need on Lifeguard Training Courses throughout the year.  I will have summer camp applications and information available right after the December Break.

NOTE:  Applications for Summer Camp jobs begin in the Winter!

For the past four years, HS students have volunteered to teach mentoring classes at Hillside.  Please let me know if you would like to teach one of these classes.  Watch for details.

If you are interested in free training to be a Party Aide, let me know by checking the appropriate space on the YES application form.

Watch for workshops in Job Search, Job Applications, Resume-Writing and Job Interviews.  In addition to these workshops, I am always available to help you individually in these areas, as well as helping you find a job or internship.

I look forward to meeting with each of you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. J. Iturbe

NOTE:  Working Papers are obtained through the Guidance Office.
