The Mandala Project

A mandala is a basic pattern of a circle with a center used to symbolize wholeness. The definition of a mandala can be found in science, religion and art.

There are many ways to create a mandala such as the calendars and sundials created by the Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations. Paint, sand, clay and string are all mediums that can be used to create mandalas.

Mrs. Cherry-Paul’s fifth grade class created geometric string art mandalas using modular arithmetic for their patterns. Students applied fabric to 10 x 10-inch wooden squares, hammered in small gold nails, and wrapped thread of various colors around the nails in patterns based on 41 numbers.

These are small versions of each student's mandala.
