Description (week of April 8, 2002)
Insect
Safari - Orkin Pest Control and the Smithsonian Institution
have partnered to present the Smithsonian O. Orkin Insect Safari,
a traveling educational exhibit created to teach humans about the
vital role insects play in the environment.
The Insect Safari is a free, multimedia educational expedition
which will arrive at the Intrepid
Sea-Air-Space Museum, NYC April 19-22.This innovative program includes
a hands-on science
exhibit with 3-D models, cross-curricular educational materials
for the classroom, and
engaging interactive assemblies that combine science, art, and storytelling.
If you are unable to tour the truck, the site has activities and
insect lesson plans for educators.
Classroom Integration
- Adapt the online lesson plans to your curriculum by downloading
cross-curricular lesson plans which are correlated to National
Science Education Standards:
Students can create a model demonstrating how an insect moves
its wings;
Students can compare and contrast human and insect senses
to understand how insects gather information about their environment.
Students can then write a short story from the point of view
of an insect.
- Students can research and identify backyard bugs using the Bug
ID Guide.
