School, The Beginning of Learning
by Steven Solano
Finally, the first Middle School paper has come! Well, it's the beginning of school and the students are moaning in pain. Some students are really excited that the school year has started, but some students are so tired from getting up early and doing all their class work and homework.
Usually, kids "think" they hate school, but do they know that the only time they get to talk to their friends mostly is here? For me personally, I like school, because I get to socialize with my friends and if I'm bored, there's work to do! There's one thing I hate most about school, detention! I don't think anybody should get detention, not unless they don't do half of their homework. Don't students know that if they need help with something they should go after school to their teachers? If you study and do absolutely fantastic in school, you won't have any problems in school or not doing homework. Still, it's a mystery of how kids get through quizzes and other tests and they don't even study? Well, if you did terrible in the years before, you've better get a move on and pump those grades up!!! The grades are just going to get harder folks. I hope we all have a great year in Eastchester Middle School.

CD BURNING: What's Wrong With It?
By Dom DeVito
Lately, a big problem has been music downloading and burning. People, including myself, are not yet crystal clear why it is illegal. For a long time this was popular to all kids. Up until a couple of months ago, there was nothing wrong' with music downloading. Suddenly, music artists decided they weren't making enough money and made it illegal because CD sales were rapidly going down. The web-site that got the most blame is Napster with 80 million registered users. The issue has gone so far that AOL even got blamed for instant messaging because in instant messaging you can share files with your friends. You would think that if music artists had any brains at all, they would realize that by shutting down these web sites, fans would boycott buying CDs altogether, which would cause an even bigger problem. Was there really anything wrong, or did greed take over? That is for you to decide.
It's The Capital of The Nation
By Matthew Barto
Washington D. C. - When anyone hears these words, they know it's the nation's capital. With over 2 million visitors a year, it ranks as the top spot for tourism in the U.S. If you have ever been there, you can see everything from the Lincoln Memorial, to the Capital Building.
Make sure you bring your camera, because if you go, you 're going to have lots of memories. Located about 4 hours from New York City, it is as close as you can get! Even if you have not been to "D.C.," there's going to be a time in your life when you will get a chance to go. When you go, you will never be bored. Even if you have been there one hundred times, you will never get bored of Washington D.C.
You Guessed It?

My Writers Recipe
By Ariel Rehr
Take a lot of creativity,
Think of worlds beyond your own,
Write it all down on a paper,
Wow, your work has shown.
A story to make you laugh,
A story to make you cry,
A truly touching story,
Puts a tear into your eye.
Think about an experience you had,
A time that made you happy or sad.
Show memories, in different ways,
Reflecting on that unique day.
Write it on paper,
Give it your special touch,
That was my writer's recipe,
Thank you very much.

One measured at 7.1 which is pretty high too. Forty-one thousand people were evacuated to shelters and many more were with out power.

From Above
By Tara ByrneAs I look into the sky I wonder what are clouds
Are they scientific forms that float high above
Or are they clouds of hope and forgiveness
Are they homes for others that are in heaven
Can they be pillows for the birds
Or maybe just they are mysterious things
That are never supposed to be found out about.

The Latest Girls Fashion Trends
What fashion trends are the girls at EMS going crazy over?
Tips For Girls
by Delia Hughes,
Kerry Stewart,
& Samantha FleischmannIs it a nice pair of tight jeans with flairs, a tee-shirt and V-shoes, or a pair of loose jogging pants with a sweat-shirt?
Casual wear is big this year. What do we usually wear? How about a nice white top with a striped tee-shirt, and a pair of faded-out blue jeans with a belt.
We also wear cargo jean skirts with red tops. Of course, you can wear boots and sneakers. Every girl loves to hang around in active wear. A red sweatshirt with gray sweatpants, with stripes down the side and a matching gray headband would look great!
Accessories!! Of course, what every girl loves!! From headbands to bracelets, everything looks great!! For example, you've got your matching "Tiffany" bracelet and necklace, or silver hoop earrings. Nomination bracelets are "in" and go with everything.
No matter what the girls in the EMS wear, or whatever is in your hair, you'll still look great!!

Welcome to Social Studies 6th Graders
By Laura Della Badia
You might be wondering what Social Studies is going to be like. In this article I'll tell you something you might want to know.
Social studies last year was based on DIRT! That's right, dirt, fertile soil, loess, silt, etc. No matter what your Social Studies teacher says, your whole unit is based on dirt. The fertile soil is used to grow crops, which leads to a surplus of food, leaving time for more people to specialize, such as artisans and scribes. Of course, you will also learn about ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, Greece, and Rome. At the end of the year you will know so much about dirt you might want to consider gardening!
Pleasures of Life
By Tara ByrneAs the wind blows it carries the many smells of fall
The smell of sweet cider and oak burning
As the wind blows it carries the colorful leaves
The leaves crackle as children leap onto them
As the wind blows it carries the crisp cold air
The chilly air cuts through the frosted grass
As the wind blows it carries the taste of fresh pie
The yummy scent travels throughout the village
As the wind blows it carries the feel of winter
The villagers start bundling up
As the wind blows it carries the pleasures of life. The After School Activities
By Steven Solano
Now it's the time of after school clubs. The fun is about to erupt! If you don't like school and you get bored every second of the day, just sit down, relax, and go after school to some of the best school clubs to take a break from all of the work you've been doing. Say, you might evenjoin the Newspaper club. You could write about anything! Hey, could you believe that they cancelled the science club this year?! The book rap is another club you could join. You could control the cameras, be the editor, be one of the two hosts, and write about a fantastic book you've read and talk about it on T.V. There are other things to do after school, like do your homework in the library. I know that doesn't sound like a big activity, but if you do all of your homework at the library, you can play around at home and have no homework!
DemiKids! Dernikids is a game for the handheld system Nintendo GameBoy Advance. The genre of this game is a RPG, so if you like other RPG's like "Pokemon" or "Golden Sun," then you 'll probably like this one (Its one of my favorite RPG's! ^_^) From the beginning of the game where I am now, (I don't know exactly where I am...) the main objective is to collect items called "Time Chains" from bosses, friends, kings, etc.
With these items you destroy these things called "Time Rifts" with the Time Chains (Also, if you buy the Light version of the game you start as a character named Jin and your main demon Edemons are the 'types of creatures in this game that you catch] is a small lion and if you buy the Dark version of the game then you start as a character named Arika and his main character is a lion). In the beginning of the game, you and some friends discover a book hidden in their school's library which tells how to summon demons. Arika and Jin chant a spell and it summons a dragon type demon which isn't very happy with them summoning him for no apparent reason. I don't know exactly what I'd rate this game, but definitely somewhere between an 8 and 10 (out of 10). I love this game so far, so I hope it makes you want to try it (I don't care if it doesn't) so, see ya later!

We Will Remember
By Robert Oswald
People cried, people died
People became heroes at ground zero
People came together,
Ran like they were light as a feather.
The lives people pray for today
Will always be remembered
For what happened on that tragic day.
SCHOOL POLICY on BULLYING
Bullying can involve pushing, shoving, hitting,
as well as name calling, picking on, making fun of, laughing at and excluding someone. Bullying causes pain and stress to victims and is never justified or excusable as "kids being kids," "just teasing" or any other rationalization. The victim is never responsible for being a target of bullying.
What Is
Bullying?
All students should feel safe, secure and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence, religion or nationality. Should another student deny them that right, they should let an administrator, counselor, or teacher know so this situation can be addressed.

The E.M.S. Newspaper Club
By Kevin Le GallFor those of you who don't know about the Newspaper club you should come take a look at an article. The E.M.S newspaper club has been in business since 2000, and they are now in the fourth year. They write about the weather, clubs, or anything else that goes around in the school. Every year they get a lot of people to join. This year they have about 25 people. (There is a connection to the E.M.S newspaper from the E.M.S. website). You can see the old issues since October 2002. Just a reminder: if you want to join the newspaper club or stop by, go to room 210 in the shared wing. You can write articles, draw cartoons, make jokes, or anything else you can think of.
