Greenvale Fifth Graders Love Learning!!!

****Fifth Grade Stars****

Fifth grade is very exciting for our students. Their time at Greenvale is coming to an end, both a sad and joyous year!

Fifth grade curriculum is very advanced and full of interesting and exciting topics. We follow New York State Curriculum and Standards. Students must take three NYS tests; Social Studies in November, English Language Arts in January, and Math in March.

Our fifth graders will be working on class research projects. These projects introduce them to the key research strategies that they will need and use throughout their school career. Students obtain research through library books and the internet. Our library teacher is very cooperative and works with the teachers to allow the students to take out books and materials pertaining to topics that we are studying.

We have quite a few topics that we work on throughout the year for all subject areas. Many projects and themes are used in science and social studies. The major themes in Science are: Variables, Matter(Chemical Changes), Grasslands (Animal and Plant Adaptations), and Micro-Organisms.

Our social studies curriculum focuses on Federal Government, Canada and the United States, Westward Migration, and Latin America.

ESPECIALLY for our "Seniors"

Greenvale Fifth graders partake in the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. This program teaches students about drugs and alcohol; their effects and how to say "no". It is a wonderful addition to our curriculum because it teaches students about real life situations that they most certainly will have to deal with. There is a culmination ceremony where the children "graduate" and recieve a certificate of completion. There is also a picnic at then end of the year at Lake Isle.

Our fifth graders get some special treats: a Broadway Show, Craft Day, Grasslands Festival, a special trip to the Middle School, and a Fifth Grade Dance held in the Greenvale gymnasium.

Our hope is that this year will be memorable and fun for our students. They worked very hard at Greenvale these past four years and deserve the best!

Congratulations!!!
